10 Best Inverter Generator Reviews in 2017

Although “You don’t know something is missing until it’s gone” is usually spoken in reference to a loved one, the same can be applied if we take electricity into consideration. Since common power generators are very utilitarian, cumbersome and not very practical for home usage, we are going to focus on Inverter Generator, to help us keep going when the power is out.

Now, I will not bore you with details on how a power generator actually works.

The bottom line is, you put gas in it, various witchcraft and black magic happen, and you have electricity.

The main reason why people choose to buy a generator is to lessen the discomfort during a power outage. With a decent generator, you could keep pretty much all of your home appliances running for some time, or light up your surrounding when you go camping.

Inverter generators are usually smaller and lighter than conventional power generators, and that is why they are becoming the obvious choice for potential buyers. They can run at variable speeds, depending on the electrical demand.

This improves the fuel economy and significantly reduces the amount of noise produced by the inverter generator.

Let’s check out which is the best inverter generator on the market today, shall we?

The first one on our list comes from WEN and is currently a best seller on Amazon. Even a brief glimpse over the features clarifies why.

This is among the cheapest inverter generators on the market, but don’t be fooled, it’s not skimpy or anything. It provides a stable surge of power, so that sensitive electronics, like laptops or smartphones, can be connected to it, without fear of damaging them.

And, what’s more important, it does its job very quietly.

Operating noise is compared to the sound of a normal conversation, so that makes it ideal for home usage, camping or urban construction sites. It has two three-prong 120V receptacles, one 12V DC jack, and one 5V USB port.

Portable, capable, quiet, cheap. Small wonder it’s a best-seller, right?

  • Enhanced Fuel Efficiency - 1.3 Gallon Gas Tank Lasts 11 Hours at a 25% Load - Runs All Night

Westinghouse is a company that dates way back, from the late 19th century, so they know what they are doing.

Their offer for an inverter generator, comes in a portable package, with integrated handle for easier transport, which offers 2100 running watts, with 2400 watts of an initial power surge.

It is very quiet scoring 59 dBa at 50% load, which in plain English means that it’s not louder than a normal conversation when operating at half of its abilities. It is also extremely fuel efficient when working at a ¼ load – it can go 11 hours with only 1.3 gallons of gas.

Despite the standard three-prong 120V sockets and the 12V jack, it features 2 USB ports, for your laptop, phone, tablet, or any other electronic device.

Highly capable, with nationwide service and support, and 3-year limited warranty, at an extremely reasonable price. Great choice!

  • Smart Throttle varies engine speed based on load - improves fuel economy and reduces noise

This little marble is what Yamaha has come up with. Very small, practical, and still packs a punch, without making too much noise.

It looks like an old portable radio receiver, and that’s very cool. Luckily it doesn’t disappoint on the features front because it offers some very intelligent solutions.

Thanks to these solutions, the safety, and comfort while operating this inverter generator and at a very high level. One of these solutions is the Gasoline petcock, which lets you shut off the gas to run the carb dry for storage and helps prevent stale gas problems.

This device delivers 1600W of running power with 2000W of starting power surge. It can run up to 10 and a half hours at 25% load.

Even though it pushes all the right buttons, unfortunately, the one next to the price is not one of them. The price is a steep, compared to other competitors on this list.

  • Quiet, lightweight, portable and powered by a reliable 171cc Champion engine with Clean Power (<3% THD), clean electricity...

Here we have a device that doesn’t try to conceal its true self. The looks give it away that it is undoubtedly a generator, but due to the size and portability, we can conclude that it’s an inverter generator.

It looks very boxy and utilitarian, but somehow handsome. The sturdy handlebar and the small wheels inform us that it is a bit on the heavy side.

Still portable, but a bit heavier than the devices mentioned above. Specs say that it will run at 2800 watts while kicking off with 3100 watts. It can run up to eight hours on a full tank of gas. The RV Ready Outlets – 120V 30A RV, two 120V 20A household, 12V DC outlets and the Economy Mode (quieter operation, more fuel savings, and longer engine life) makes it an ideal choice for ambitious camping travelers.

The price leans towards the high end, but make no mistake; this is a highly capable inverter generator. Included in the price, you get the three-year limited warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Champion Inverter Generator

This one here has some weird “Lego” quality to it. Probably because of it sturdy, boxy looks. It may look innocent or underwhelming, but that is surely not the case.

With initial 2000 watts starting power and 1700 watts running power, low operating noise and up to 9.5 hours of run-time, it surely knows its role.

Thanks to the affordable price, it can easily be combined or “stacked” as the folks from Champion like to call it, with another inverter to get more power.

It has two 120V 20A household and 12V DC outlets with Clean Power (extremely low occurrences of fluctuation in the power surge. The two year limited warranty and free lifetime technical support, summing it up to be a very reasonable choice.

6. Honda EU2000I 2000 Watt Inverter Generator

Honda EU2000I 2000 Watt Inverter Generator
  • Starting System: Recoil
  • Noise LevelP: 59 dB at rated load 53dB at 1/4 load
  • AC Output: 120V 2000W Max. (16.7A) / 1600W Rated: (13.3A)

Similar to the Yamaha we saw earlier, this representative from Honda is also quite petite in dimensions. It looks more like a toaster, or like those oversized radio transceivers with integrated lighting, people used for camping. But, let’s not steer away from the topic.

Even though it’s small, it is still very impressive. It delivers initial 2000 watts surge, or 1600 watts running power output, while being generally quiet at common operation, or very quiet when operating at 25% load. It will keep on going up to 8.1 hours at ¼ load, on a full tank which takes up less than a gallon.

Everything looks very promising with this inverter generator, but before you rush off to order one, keep in mind that it’s among the most expensive on our list. Too bad, because it is an excellent all-rounder.

  • Quiet, lightweight, portable and powered by a reliable 171cc Champion engine with Clean Power (<3% THD), clean electricity...

We have already seen what this power unit can do when we previously presented the Champion Power Equipment 75531i model.

It is literally the same device, so describing its looks or going through the technical specifications once again, would be a waste of time.

The only difference with the previous model is that this one has wireless control possibility. Yes, one can enjoy the blessings of starting or stopping this inverter generator from a distance up to 80 feet.

Do you need that?

Will it boost up your “street cred” to your favorite camp site?

Is it worth roughly an extra $100?

In the end, it’s your choice; we’re not here to judge.

8. Westinghouse iGen2000 Portable Inverter Generator

Another awesome deal from Westinghouse, coming right up! It also comes in a small and lightweight package, with looks slightly resembling a case with automotive snow chains.

Unlike the one we saw previously, this one initially pumps out 2000 watts, while the running power is 1800 watts.

This means that, even though it has the same gas tank capacity, this inverter generator will go strong up to 13 hours at a ¼ load. The difference can also be found in the absence of USB ports in this model.

You still get the same nationwide service and support, and 3-year limited warranty as you would get with the WH2400i model.

We’re glad to say that this excellent small package has a price tag situated in the affordable section of the chart.

This is what the experienced folk at Briggs & Stratton have to offer as an inverter generator. Coming from a company that’s been active in this field for more than a century, this device has a lot of weight on its shoulders.

Good thing is that, as it turns out, it has very strong shoulders. This device delivers a running surge of 1700 watts, with a peak at 2200 watts initial power.

The 1-gallon tank is enough to keep it running up to 8 hours at 25% load. With the operating noise of just 59dB, one might not even notice that it’s working, since that is the volume of a normal conversation.

With a price situated in the middle of the price range and capabilities that are more than enough for the average user, this device is a proud representative of the established Briggs & Stratton family.

10. Generac 6866 iQ2000

  • Status indicators alert users when the generator is overloaded, overheating, or low in fuel and/or oil.

Here we have the inverter generator from Generac. It weighs less than 50 lbs. So portability is not an issue. With the ability to deliver 2000 starting watts, and 1600 watts running power, it mixes very well with the rest of the bunch.

Even though there is a switch to engage “Turbo,” “Standard” or “Economy” mode, the best it could do is run up to 7.7 hours at 25% load. Unlike any other device we’ve seen, this one uses LED displays to inform the user about the remaining charge.

So, there is a remaining run-time display, “Powerbar” and a “fuel-gauge.” This means that you will get information how much time is left until refueling is needed, how much power it is producing at the moment and approximately how much is left in reserve.

 It that really necessary?

Is it so wrong to have only an indicator that will let you know when it runs low on gas?

The price is placed somewhere between the middle and the upper section of the pricing chart, so it’s not too expensive. What might annoy some people is the advertising approach of using condescending tone towards the competitors, instead of pointing out how good the Generac products actually are.

Conclusion

Have the best inverter generator as per your requirements
Have the best inverter generator as per your requirements

In the end, I will share a few safety warnings and advice concerning the inverter generators. Make sure that it is out of reach for children or pets, especially when it’s working. Store it in a dry, safe and secure spot when it’s idle.

It is also out of great importance, to make sure you don’t overtax your generator by plugging in more devices than it could support. Doing that will activate the safety switches which will force the generator to shut down, to prevent overheating, thus cutting the power to everything it is supplying power to.

Pretty much all of the items on the list comply with emissions regulations, so they’re eco-friendly. Also, the vast majority of the inverter generators have the possibility of connecting another generator in parallel, so that more power is produced.

Overall, inverter generators are a true delight, when dealing with portable generators. They are lightweight, quiet, portable and capable of producing clean and stable current. The only negative side at this moment is the price, but one can be sure that, as new models enter the inverter generator battle, the prices will drop, while the features list will extend.
