Now that he has won the presidency, Donald Trump pledges to “make America great again.” Here are some of the ways that Trump plans to do it based on promises made during the campaign, after winning the presidency and the hundred day policy plan he announced yesterday, 22 November 2016.
Top Doland Trump Pledges
1. “Build the Wall.”
This was his first campaign pledge and most popular one by far. His supporters always chanted “build the wall” during his rallies. Trump promised to “build the wall” on the border of the United States and Mexico that stands 30 feet high and will run 1200 miles, beginning from the town of Brownsville in California to the city of El Paso in Texas. Trump also promised to have the Mexican government pay for it. Therefore, people will want to see if he builds the wall or who pays for it.
2. Conduct Massive Undocumented Immigrant Deportation
Trump pledges to have millions of undocumented immigrants deported immediately. During his interview with 60 Minutes as President-elect, Trump mentioned that promise once again, stating that he will have two to three million undocumented or illegal immigrants deported. He added that once the border is made secure, he would make a determination on the remaining undocumented immigrants.
3. Enact a Temporary Muslim Ban in the United States
During the campaign, Trump promised to ban Muslims temporarily from entering the United States. He stated that there should be “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.” Since then, he toned down his position and instead suggested “suspending immigration from nations tied to Islamic terror.”.
4. Impose Stricter Vetting Measures towards Immigrants
Trump also mentioned stricter vetting measures for immigrants who wish to work in the United States, based on their likely success in the country. In his 100-day policy plan, Trump pledges to examine visa programs, stating that he will “investigate all abuses of visa programs that undercut the American worker.” Trump also said that there is a need for stricter measures to fight domestic terror.
5. Renegotiate Terms or Withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
Trump, promised to renegotiate terms or completely pull out of NAFTA and TPP, free trade agreements which are viewed by his supporters as unfair to them. Trump’s protectionist position is seen as a concrete action against the threat of globalization to American workers.
Trump’s first 100 days in office plan includes the withdrawal from TPP. Trump pledges to replace the TPP with “fair bilateral trade deals.”
6. Bring Back Jobs to America
To further protect and strengthen the local market, Trump pledged to bring back jobs to America, specifically to the manufacturing sector. The American manufacturing sector has taken a particularly big hit in the last four decades, and Trump promises to bring back four million jobs back to it. Also, Trump pledged to offer jobs to Americans first rather than to immigrants and create 25 million jobs in the next decade.
7. Repeal Obamacare
Trump pledges to repeal the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, but retain two of its main provisions. During the campaign, he promised to have Obamacare fully repealed and replaced by a new system. The new system which allows individuals to have Health Savings Accounts and have their premiums deducted from their tax returns. However, after his meeting with President Barack Obama, Trump announced that he would retain two of Obamacare’s main provisions upon the suggestion of Obama, which allow parents to keep adult children up to age 26 insured under their parents’ policies and banning insurers from denying coverage to individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
8. Prosecute Hillary Clinton and have Her Imprisoned
Aside from “build the wall,” Trump supporters chanted “lock her up.” They chanted referring to his promise of having Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton jailed due to some reasons. The reasons include her deleted e-mails that were stored on a private server and the 2012 terrorist attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya; wherein she was accused of being complicit in the crime. Trump pledges to appoint a special prosecutor that will lead the trial against Clinton.
9. Appoint Conservative Judges to the Supreme Court
Catholics and Christians who support his stance against abortion voted for Trump. Trump pledges to appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v.Wade, the landmark court decision that gave women abortion rights.
10. Strengthen the Military
During the campaign period, Trump pledged to strengthen the military by increasing the size of the US Army. He wants to strengthen it to 540,000 active duty soldiers and the Marine Corps to 36 battalions, rebuilding the US Navy’s goal of having 350 ships, and having the Pentagon audited, just to name a few. He also pledged to strengthen veteran affairs.
11. Strengthen the Police
He also pledged to bring back the policy of stop-and-frisk, especially in cities like Chicago, where there is the rampant crime in the inner cities.
12. Strengthen Cybersecurity
In his 100-day policy plan, Trump pledges to follow through on his campaign promise of strengthening the US cyber security, first by establishing a cyber-review team composed of the military, law enforcement, and the private sector. After the review, US Cyber Framework will have some adjustments according to the plan of the president-elect.
13. Crack Down on ISIS
Trump pledged to work with US allies in the Middle East to fight against ISIS. He wants to do this through joint military operations and expanded intelligence.
14. Protect the Second Amendment
A staunch advocate of the right to bear arms, Trump pledged to remove gun-free zones. He also wants to reform background check rules for gun purchases and enact the right to carry across the US.
15. Focus on energy and reduce environmental restrictions
Trump pledges to focus expanding the energy industry to include the use of shale, clean coal, and natural oil reserves and reducing environmental restrictions that counter this goal. In fact, this pledge includes in his first 100-days in office plan.
